Yoga Philosphy - What is Yoga? | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
| Class Description : The answer is not as obvious as it may seem. In fact, the various systems of yoga that developed in India over the centuries are different answers to that fundamental question. But this workshop does not treat the question nor the answers from a theoretical perspective. It does provide a chronological overview of the development of yoga. It does explore the major systems from the perspective of their answers to that question. And it does provide a useful framework for further study. But, most importantly, it explores the various approaches to life and to practice that each system contains. Geared primarily for those with some prior exposure to the various yoga systems, this workshop will be an ideal opportunity to fill-in any gaps that participants might have as to the history of yoga and also to go deeper into the heart of each school examined, ending with a comfortable degree of basic familiarity with the major systems. The workshop will combine a lively and insightful presentation of some of the most important teachings of the various schools, including the origins of yoga, the classical formulation of Patanjali's, the various systems of Vedanta and the various approaches of Tantrism, including Kashmir Shaivism. It will also include a variety of meditative and other practices, representative of each of these schools, so as to give participants an "inside" feel for each one. The Foundation of Yoga ¡§C Why Yamas and Niyamas are of crucial importance | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
| Class Description : According to Maharsi Patanjali, yoga is eight-limbed. For all-round development of an individual, all the limbs must have appropriate growth. After all, the state of Kaivalya, was qualified by Patanjali to be a state by which one acts without being distracted by his or others' actions within and without. It is a state of totality where the Kevali (the sole in-dweller) will neither have desire nor the normal drives ascribed to all human beings. He becomes a living embodiment of total stability, inner freedom and peace. The very presence of such a stable system in turn catalyses all other unstable systems that come in its vicinity to move faster towards stability. Even though there has been a lot of emphasis and effort to develop and practise the three limbs - namely Asana, Pranayama and Dhyana - the other two limbs of Dharana and Samadhi have yet to make their impact on the practitioner's mind. Unfortunately, there has been scant respect and very little concern about the very foundation of Ashtanga Yoga, namely Yama and Niyama. Yama pertains to the social behaviour of the individual, and Niyama pertains to the transformation that has to happen within the individual. These Yamas and Niyamas make their appearances in different versions among all the religions of the world. There, they are termed as morals, ethics, etc. But unfortunately in the practice of religions, the yogic element is missing and in today's yoga practice the Yama and Niyama have been given a go by. As it happened with the religions of the past, this lack of emphasis in yoga will hamper the attainment of Kaivalya for yoga practitioners. It is high time all yoga practitioners and teachers start implementing the Patanjali's code of Yama and Niayama, so that one can move in the path of perfection faster. If not, the very practice may create unnecessary obstacles in one's practice and may also cause irreparable damages to the system. |

The relationship between Yoga and Ayurveda | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
| Class Description : Both Ayurveda and Yoga believe that the individual is comprised of five consecutive layers. The Annamayakosha - the gross body made up of food, The Pranamayakosha - the energetic body and seat of longevity, The Manomayakosha - the seat of the psyche and finally the Anandamayakosha - the seat of eternal bliss. The practice of Ayurveda involves creating a healthy environment from within so the physical body, with its many organs and vital energetic fields, will function on an optimal level. Modern medicine tends to deal with the gross body alone, whereas Yoga and Ayurveda take all the five seats of the individual into consideration when treating the body/mind organism. The individual is not just skin, flesh and bone, but an intricate composite of all five layers mentioned above. Ayurveda and Yoga also believe in the concept of Karma - we come from somewhere and we are going somewhere, i.e. there are past lives and there will be future lives; by paying more attention to our karmas and our actions, we are no longer helpless creatures in a world of chance, but co-creator to our own destiny. The main focus of Ayurveda and Yoga is to create optimum health and well-being so the inner soul will be less troubled by life, and can live with greater happiness in his internal and external environments. Fundamentally both practices originate from the same tradition - to create optimum health from within so the immortal soul may be realised by this mortal body/mind organism. One may be more of a physical nature, the other spiritual, but Yoga without Ayurveda becomes blind, and Ayurveda without Yoga will be lame. This lecture will focus on how they influence each other, and how we can learn the collaboration between the two for better clarity and health in our own practice. |

Yoga Philosphy - The Tantric Universe | Carlos Pomeda | Lecture |
| Class Description : What is most unique about Tantra and tantric yoga philosophy? Quite simply, the fact that its teachings and practices are best suited for contemporary life. Departing from earlier notions of asceticism and dry scholarship, Tantra presents a sublimely inspiring view of the world and of human existence, one that incorporates all aspects of human existence: the heart, the intellect, the body and the environment. In this seminar we will explore Tantra and what is perhaps its most refined formulation, Kashmir Shaivism, from a perspective that is both inspirational and entirely applicable to our daily lives. We will dispel the most common misunderstandings about what Tantra is and is not, investigating its roots and its development, and uncovering the answers it provides to the most fundamental questions of existence, as well as the practices it developed to expand human consciousness. Ultimately, we will discover the value of Tantric practice in that it reveals the divine right in the midst of the ordinary, charging our lives with meaning. Join us for this relevant, insightful and inspiring seminar. |

Obstacles in the path of Yoga ¡§C How to manage them | MA Narasimhan | Lecture |
| Class Description : The yoga path is not a cake walk. It is a path of self-evaluation and evolution. The major obstacles for a yogaarudha (the yoga aspirant) are of two types. Personality-based and circumstantial. Personality-based - They are five in number. They are those where the individual, because of his own idiosyncrasies, will not be able to understand the transformations that are going on within him and gets into a situation where he becomes an obstacle to the goal that he is pursuing. According to Patanjali, the remedy is Svadhyaya or self-assessment. He speaks of how one gets entangled and suffers by his own conditioned reflexes without ever being aware of the reasons for his suffering. As he is unaware of the real source of his misery, he tries to get out of it with his limited resources, resulting in more and more entanglements. Patanjali gives a solution of how to get away from this vicious circle and transform the very sources of disturbance into catalysts of evolution. Circumstantial - This is about external obstacles. They happen to be nine in number and can happen to anyone at any given moment for no apparent reason. Patanjali speaks about the obstacles following the dictum "forewarned is forearmed". It is rare indeed that we come across analysis of the mind and the self, in terms of being the centre of the universe of action. Maharsi Patanjali tackles these obstacles in his own inimitable way, and tells us what to do and how to sail through the path of yoga with least disturbance to the system while following the normal lifestyle that is expected of every human being... |

Patanjali ¡§C The father of Yoga, Ayurveda and Sanskrit Grammar | Vaidya Sri Bhagwan Dash | Lecture |
| Class Description : In the Indian tradition, optimum health of body, mind and speech is a reflection of a state of purity from within. You ma, y have one without the other, but the health of our body, mind and speech is an extension of a greater state of being that equally supports all. Maharishi Patanjali was a great sage with tremendous spiritual insight into the dimensions of all three aspects. He is therefore considered to be a great authority in the subject of Yoga, Ayurveda and Vyakarana (Grammar). Whether it is the same person associated with each tradition or merely three people with the same name we cannot know, but amongst popular belief in India it is believed he was one and the same, and hence there are various verses ascribed to him for his great commentary and enunciation of each subject. The focus of this lecture, apart from a brief survey of the historical figure of Patanajali, will be to explore the idea synchronicity within all three subjects and how the improvement of one may lead to a gradual improvement of all. |
